[Personality] Rei is very much like the ideal Japanese woman, reserved and intelligent, but she isn’t a pushover. Not only does she have a natural beauty but she is a passionate warrior. She fights for what she believes in, whether it is her role as a sailor senshi or even as a shrine maiden. She takes both positions seriously, but it is the duty to protect Sailor Moon, a destiny she shares with the other sailor senshi, that grounds her into the strong, and fierce fighter of fire and passion.
Before meeting Usagi and the others, Rei only looked to herself. Her trust in others tarnished by the errors of her father, and people’s perception of her psychic powers. Because of her father and his devotion to his job and not his family, and his lack of involved during her mother’s ailing health, Rei grew to dislike men and also to rely on herself for strength. She was a fairly private person, believing she didn’t need to make friends or get to know anyone. If she has a problem she confides in herself, and her opinions or fears are never voiced verbally, but observed mentally. She’s not one to get too emotional unless there’s a good reason for her to lose her composure. She doesn’t dwell on the past, but works on the present a bit at a time.
Even though she’s admired by many in school and on the street by onlookers, she gives them a polite distance. She rarely involves herself with people outside of school. Declining most offers to hang out, or choosing to refuse gifts. Because of her psychic abilities and intimidating air, some people find her creepy, cold and unapproachable. They especially believe it is weird that she keeps company with a pair of crows, Phobos and Deimos. So she is isolated by people and Rei willing isolates herself as well.
Rei is far from indifferent or uncaring. When she first makes her appearance in the manga, it was during Jadiete’s lure to steal more energy from human beings. Jadeite was using a ploy of a local bus to kidnap passengers, and since the bus was near her shrine, rumors began to befallen the Hikawa shrine. At first, Rei seems calm and level headed, but once the adults began to gossip about her and even her Grandfather’s shrine, her temper comes out. To speak badly about something she was passionate and in which the shrine was virtually innocent from string of abductions definitely pushed Rei’s buttons enough to lose her composure. She cares deeply for the shrine and its reputation. It is her dream to even take over the shrine in her Grandfather’s footsteps, so of course she will protect it, even if she must show an ugly side of herself.
In order to end the rumors, Rei goes and investigates the demonic bus herself. Not only does she feel she needs to protect the shrine, but she feels obligated to find out what’s going on since more people were missing. Even if she had to board the bus herself and place herself in danger, there was something within her that wanted to resolve this mystery.
It was also revealed that Rei had loved someone in her past, Mr. Kaidou, her father's protegee. From that experience she realizes that when she loves, she does so intensely to the point of such passion and possessiveness that she fears she could ruin that person. Perhaps this is why she decides to distances herself from others. She is capable of such intensity that even she fears it.
Sailor Mars is born, but she wasn’t exactly thrilled about becoming a senshi. She feels that having to do senshi business was a burden, and she wasn’t enthusiastic about spending her precious time with the senshi. Although, it takes Rei a while to warm up to Usagi and the others, she does eventually care for them and becomes even protective of them. When she remembers her past life as a guardian of the princesss, she seems even more willing to aide Usagi. Even to the point of sacrificing her life along with the other sailor senshi in order to strengthen Sailor Moon’s power against Queen Metallia’s darkness. No matter the enemy, Rei knows what is called for. A quick, and unapologetic attack to protect Sailor Moon, and if she needed her power,Mars would give it up to Sailor Moon willingly.
After meeting the girls, Rei seems to be more comfortable with herself. At times she has doubts about her future, whether she should only settle for being a priestess, while everyone else have dreams of marriage and exciting careers. At times She doesn’t feel she needs to be like everyone else. She feels comfortable in her own skin because there are others who can share her burden. She is surrounded by other’s who isn’t the typical girl. So when it comes to boys or her future, she can have confidence in her decisions.
Although, Rei has become close with the other senshi, she especially close to only a few. Usagi is the catalyst of Rei’s transformation, if it was not for meeting her, Rei wouldn’t be the person she is. Rei was very much a loner, but with Usagi’s influence in her life, she gains friends, a purpose and even a strength she didn’t know she has. In the beginning, Rei doubted her ability to be leader or a suitable senshi, but soon she learned to trust in Usagi and her power. Rei still doesn’t condone everything Usagi does, but she does believe and appreciates her. Whenever her resolves falters, it is her vow to protect Usagi that gives her strength.
Even when she was deceived into believing that Minako was the princess they sought, Rei admired Minako’s ability as Venus and felt she was more suited to be princess than Usagi. Even as a leader, Rei feels that Minako is capable. Outside of being a senshi, Rei and Minako have clashing personalities; they are each other’s opposites. Minako is obviously more outgoing, althetic and cheerful, and at times Rei finds it to be annoying and even endearing. Rei definitely believes Minako is her friend, being the only one out of the senshi that she confides in. She reveals to Minako her desire to go to school with everyone, and even her fear that their current battle with Galaxia could be their last. It is Minako’s encouraging words that dispel Rei’s doubts, and the two are even closer for it.
Though Michiru and Rei barely interact in the manga, for some reason it is Michiru that Rei looks to during her dream in the Dead Moon Circus. Rei and Michiru have a lot in common as people as well as senshi. Both of them both have psychic abilities, a natural beauty and elegant talent. As senshi they are both fierce fighters. It shows that Rei must admire Michiru in some way, and that connection must have allowed her spirit to seek her guidance. It is Michiru’s words that initiates Rei’s new attack “Mars Flame Sniper”, a powerful attack that destroys the disillusionment of Dead Moon House of Mirrors.
Phobos and Deimos are denizens of the Planet Coronis, who have befriended Rei when she first moved to the Hikawa Shinto Shrine. Noticeably she doesn’t treat them as pets, but friends. Towards the end of the manga, Phobos and Deimos come to Rei’s aide, giving her her Mars Crystal in order to transform. The crows also aide Rei and Minako in their fight with Sailor Red Crow. Even though they come from a different planet, they wish to help Rei, and would even sacrifice their lives for her.
Despite how much Rei can find inner strength in herself, like Usagi, she finds more strength in the company of her friends. With the involvement of the senshi and their common goal, Rei can defeat her enemies and also stand by her own dreams. Though she is outwardly cold and unapproachable to most, within she is like an ardent flame, burning passionately.
